Woodkid was undoubtedly the first surprise of 2011 ; an unexpected arrival far from the mainstream buzz. The 28 year-old has come with « Iron », an EP of raw beauty.
Woodkid, aka Yoann Lemoine, is originally known as a very talented music video director : from Lana Del Rey (« Born To Die ») to Katy Perry (« Teenage Dream »), Mystery Jets, Moby or Yelle.
The legend says that during a shoot in the USA, Woodkid received, straight from the hands of great American guitarist Richie Havens, a banjo that immediately replaced his piano, at least for a while. Without neglecting his activity as a director (for music or even cinema, which is also part of his project), Woodkid decided to devote himself to create his own music, and he naturally made the « Iron » video himself, that features British top model Agyness Deyn.
With just four tracks (plus two remixes of « Iron » by English band Mystery Jets and french duo Gucci Vump, formed by Brodinski and Guillaume Briere from The Shoes), the EP reveals a very sensitive and unique artist. Starting with the eponymic song « Iron », epic pop with a powerful mounted symphony, this first work (produced by Woodkid, Julien Delfaud and Benjamin Lebeau also from The Shoes) clearly announces the influences of the young man.
An obvious thought goes to Antony and The Johnsons : Woodkid and Anthony could be kindred spirits of the voice. We can also hear the sweet folk influences of New York ("my heart belongs to Brooklyn" sings Woodkid on the second track of the EP) and a brillant way to play with melodies that emphases Yoann Lemoine’s gift for songwritting, that floats somewhere between Neil Hannon and Bonnie Prince Billy.
EP « Iron » offers a universe of fragile grâce : four original songs, Iron, Brooklyn, Baltimore's Fireflies and Wasteland, sometimes written on guitar, sometimes on piano, but always with disconcerting ease. Only one listen is necessary to make you feel like you are witnessing the creation of these wonderful stories, sat next to Woodkid himself.
Woodkid is currently working on his album « The Golden Age », including some surprising collaborations...
