Patti Smith, born in Chicago and raised in South Jersey, migrated to New York in 1967, where she met Robert Mapplethorpe and together they encouraged each other to attain their artistic pursuits.

In 1975 Patti Smith’s first recording, Horses, became a seminal album, followed by Radio Ethiopia, Easter, and Wave.  In 1980 she relocated to Detroit, married Fred “Sonic” Smith, and had two children, Jackson and Jesse, both now musicians in their own right.  1988, Patti and Fred Smith recorded Dream of Life.  After Fred’s passing in 1994, Patti moved back to New York to transition into the next phase of her life.

The albums recorded since then have been Gone Again, Peace and Noise, Gung Ho, trampin, Twelve, as well as a compilation album entitled Land, and a reissue of Horses, entitled Horses/Horses. June 23, 2010 The Library of Congress/National Recording Preservation Board inducted Horses into the National Recording Registry.

Patti Smith is the author of Witt, Babel, Coral Sea, Woolgathering, Auguries of Innocence, and the currently acclaimed memoir, Just Kids, which was awarded the 2010 National Book Award.

Patti Smith’s art has been exhibited at galleries and museums worldwide. Represented by the Robert Miller Gallery in New York, in 1978, her exhibition, Strange Messenger, was launched at the Andy Warhol Museum in 2002 and the extensive exhibition Land 250, was featured at the Cartier Foundation of Contemporary Art in 2008.

As well as a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, Patti Smith also holds the honor of  “Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres from the French Ministry of Culture, and has been awarded honorary doctorates from Rowan State University, Pratt Institute of Art, and the School of Art Institute Chicago.  Steven Sebring’s 2008 documentary, dream of life: the movie, was acknowledged internationally and received an Emmy nomination. 2010 Patti Smith was honored by ASCAP with the Founders Award, representing lifetime achievement.

Into 2011, Patti Smith was listed amongst the TIME 100 influential people in the world, as well as one of Rolling Stone’s 100 Greatest Artists. She also is the 2011 recipient of Sweden’s Polar Award that is an international acknowledgement for significant achievements in music.

Exhibits in 2011 included “Babelogue” at New York City’s Hunter College’s Art Gallery September 7-December 3, 2011 which included the 9.11 Strange Messenger silkscreens and  “Camera Solo” at Hartford’s Wadsworth Atheneum October 20, 2011-February 2012 and June 1-September 1 an exhibition at The Detroit Institute of Art.  The Camera Solo exhibit travels to the Art Gallery of Toronto Feb 9-May 13, 2013.

Patti Smith and her band released a new studio recording entitled Banga on June 5, 2012. The band had an extensive European during the summer.   In October they will perform along the West Coast and in early November 2012 will return to Europe. Following that, they will tour with Neil Young in late November.  2013 begins with a tour of Japan in January.

Patti continues working on new book projects, readings, art, and human rights issues.
